Charlie Manuel was being a hardhead; he was staying with Pedro just like Grady Little. Hideki Matsui had already opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning when he took Pedro deep for the 1st blow of the game, now Pedro was in some more trouble and he was struggling big-time. This time it was in the 3rd when Jeter single & Damon walked setting up a meeting with Mark Texiera with only 1 out. The game was on the verge of getting out of hand for the Phillies & Manuel would not make a move, not even after Pedro had lost his control hitting Texiera to load up the bases for A-ROD. All I was thinking was what is Manuel thinking? He stayed with Pedro and the gamble paid off when Manuel and the Phils caught a break when Pedro got A-ROD on a called strike 3 for out #2, it was a break because it was borderline & on the reply it showed that is was clearly off the plate.
You would think that A-ROD would be the last man that Pedro would face, but not Manuel who stayed with the beaten righty even when he had the lefty A.J. Happ ready for Mastui. Manuel went with Pedro and this time he would get burned. Pedro had 2 strikes on Matsui but Matsui would get the bat on the ball for a hit & 2 more runs to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead, the party was getting started. Right then & there I knew the game was over. The only thing Charlie Manuel did right on this night was to save Pedro from the embarrassment of walking off the Yankee stadium mound in front of a Yankee stadium crowd that was ready to give the old villain one last standing ovation of boos along with the WHO'S YOUR DADDY chorus right behind it. Being a fan of Pedro, it was a bit hard for me to see the guy going out the way he did, the legend is officially done.
For Pedro the time has come to quit while he is still ahead. Throughout the years Pedro was built to be the most hated opposing player that has come through the NY baseball scene by the NY media, and most of it was done to sell papers, and before game 6 the NY Post had a picture of Pedro's face attached to the body of a baby in a diaper, right on the front page, and you saw it all over the stadium during the game, even the stadium's was in it as it led the charge with the fans who chanted (WHO YOUR DADDY!) right in tune with the Organist.
Game 6 was all about the NY Yankees and Hideki Matsui, on this night Matsui would lead the way with his blistering bat, if this was the last we see of Matsui as a Yankee, this is the way to go. After the Phillies had score 2 runs in the 6th to make the game 7-3, they would try for some more in the 7th, with 2 on & 2 outs & Chase Utley up next with a chance to try & break a WS HR record, and a chance to bring the Phillies within a run. But the record would stay, in came Damaso Marte to relieve Joba, & Marte got on Utley in a quick 0-2 hole, he would finish off Utley on a sweeping slider 1,2,3 & a check swing. Inning over, game over, all that was left was for the Yankees & Mariano Rivera to get that 27th out. It would be last man standing for the Fighting Phillies, that man was Shane Victorino, & on a 3-2 pitch Big Mo got Victorino to ground out to Cano for the final out making it official, as the Yankees have dethrone the defending champs & were now champions themselves once again.
On the field all the players were hugging it out as FOX & the camera's caught the scene, it was time for one of my favorite parts affter the game, the post game interviews. FOX made it's way down on to the field to get the players reactions & the 1st they got a hold of was Johnny Damon, who was quickly asked to compare the 2 WS, Damon didn’t try to sugarcoat the Yankee win, he was honest & said they were both in their own way very special, he was just happy to finally have a title as a Yankee. Up next it was the skipper Joe Girardi, who hoisted up the WS trophy and let out a yelled out to the fans, YEA!!, he said (this one is for MR. Steinbrenner) Fox then moved on to Hideki Matsui, who along with his interpreter was up their to receive the World Series MVP trophy, Godzilla was having his moment, up next it was Alex Rodriguez, who awkwardly let it be known he was going to party, he was followed by Pettite who was serenaded by the fans & said he was just lucky to be on this team, FOX would then dissed Derek Jeter by paying the bills, but when they came back Jeter let it be known that it was back where it belongs. Mo then had his words, and then it was capped off by the one Yankee who gets on my nerves the most, Jorge Posada, he had to bring back Steinbrenner's name because he had nothing to say.
The FOX cameras then moved to the losers looking to have a word from the losing manager Charlie Manuel, always a reluctant intervier, but Manuel was nothing but gracious in the defeat saying all the right words, he said he was proud of his team & that they will be back, but that the Yankees were simply one heck of a team.
Before the series began I had said that if the Yanks were to win the WS, that A-ROD & Texiera were going to have to come up big & carry the offense, but as it played out neither one did much to prove my theory, this was a team effort that was led by the starting pitching that took care of a Phillie’s heavy hitting lineup & their dangerous lefty hitters who were held in check with the exception of Chase Utley. Sabathia & Pettite lefty arms along with Mariano Rivera, & Girardi's 3 man rotation prove to be the right call.
Yes I am a Mets fan.
And yes I root against the Yankees.
However I will have to give credit where credit is due. The Yankees had a hell of a year and as a baseball fan first and foremost I will congratulate the winners of the World Series. So congratulations to those real diehard Yankee fans, you know who you are, enjoy being the champions, cause I know that every year you don't win, yall suffer.
NEW YORK YANKEES 2009 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!

It was a great win, its feels great to see your team climb to the top of the mountain. Yeah, Pedro didn't have it last night. Like I told Danny last night, I would have hoped that they would have given Pedro a nice ovataion. Unfortunatley I dont think that would have happened but I want to believe that NY fans are smarter than they probably are. Matsui came up huge, that guy is a pro. I dont know that he'll be back but if this was it for his Yankee career, he went out on top.
Its funny to me when I hear Yankee fans, mostly "New" York Yankee fans say that its been a long time coming. What did they say about the 16 year span of no championships from 79-96?
This was a great finish to the season, I'll enjoy it for a couple of weeks and then start in with the hot stove. Its going to be a very interesting off-season for both Yankees and Mets.
wow I thought I had save this, I did not meant to throw this out there, this was jibberish I had plan to edit tonight, when I just notice I had press the publish button by mistake. Anyway will edit.
Hey RAY got the POST & the Dailynews and will mail them out to you tomorrow.
I bet it feels good
Yea long time coming, how can Yankee fans say that?
Because those are the new fans that came aboard in 95-96 so they got spoiled. True, long time fans know better.
I'm such an asshole. I just now read this entry.
Being the asshole that I am I have to nitpick at what I can:
Why does Jorge get on your nerves?
ARod din't have any big hits in the WS? Did we watch the same WS? I think EVERY hit he did get was huge. If he wasn't getting hits it's because the Phillies were too busy plunking him instead of pitching to him. You didn't see us punking out and plunking Utley. The Phils embarrased themselves in my book.
They won one game with complete pitching dominance and the other they squirmed by. Cliff Lee got hit for five runs on regular rest his 2nd time out so imagine if he pitched on short rest?
