The NY Mets have been in existence for 54 years, yet no one in the history of the Mets has been able to clout 3 HR's in a game when playing at home, now there has been Mets players who have done this feat when on the road, guys like Darryl Strawberry and Jose Reyes come to mind, in fact a total of 9 players have done it, but no one at Shea or Citi field.
Well on the last game before the ALL STAR break history was finally made when an unlikely character, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a guy the Mets designated for assignment (meaning the Mets gave up on him) after hitting an abysmal 079, picked up by the Angels in mid May where he hit just 136, after 10 games, the Angels DA Nieuwenhuis again, where he was than claimed back by the Mets who sent him to the minors. In the minors Nieuwenhuis found his stroke where he was hitting 294 with 7 HR and 20 RBI's in 15 games for the Las Vegas 51's triple A club, the Mets who are desperate for some offense decided to bring Nieuwenhuis back to the big club on July 7th, on July 12th Nieuwenhuis was in the starting lineup and delivered making history with 3 HR's helping the Mets sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field becoming the 1st Mets to accomplish the feat.
And that's the beauty of baseball, where Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a guy who had a total of 7 hits between the Angels and Mets, still capable of having a day where he gets his name on the Mets record books. No other sport plays out the way the game of baseball does, cause it doesn't matter how big or how small you are, it's the every man's sport, so Whadda day Kirk! and now back to the bench.
