Last week Yeonis Cespedes finally had an offer on the table by the Washington Nationals, a suppose 5 year deal at $100 million, after that rumors followed that Cespedes wanted to stay with the Mets and there was a small chance that the Mets may bring him back to Queens.
But before all of this, I had already made up my mind and moved on, to me it didn't seem likely that an agreement would be reached that would fit both parties. At the same time and knowing my Mets, there was no way I saw the Mets bringing back Cespedes when he has been clearly asking for 6 years worth of contract and we all know the NY Mets were not going to go there.
Still here was this small possibility but the more I thought about it the more it became clear to me that Cespedes was just not coming back to the Mets in 2016.
To me the plan for 2016 was that the Mets were going to let their pitching carry them again and if they needed to make another mid-season deal to put them over then so be it.
This was the plan and I was OK, as long as the Mets didn't sign anyone who didn't deserve to be signed to any long and ridiculous contract and commitment I was fine with going forward with this plan.
I was ready to go into the 2016 season without Cespedes but then it happened.
Some how the Mets and Cespedes signed the papers and the Mets got the best man free agency had to offer and they got him at pretty much their terms. It took a 3 year deal and $75 million, a deal that if all goes well for both parties, it essentially is a 1 year deal for $27 mil.
Then the shock set in.
Of course I was excited to have the Cuban defector coming back in the middle of the Mets lineup because Yeonis Cespedes complete the Mets lineup. The Mets made it official and now they are ready to make another run. They are all in.
The NY Mets have become the sexy team and destination, they have the young arms and the right guys running the ship and players around the league are beginning to notice that this is not the same old Mets from a few years back who were viewed as a joke of a organization.
It's not everyday that you see a player leave money on the table but we have now seen it twice with the Mets, 1st with Michael Cuddyer and now we see Cespedes helping out the Mets. Money usually runs things but in this case it seemed like money was not the only thing here.
I can't wait!

Well, because its my job I'll throw some rain on your parade. Yes, right now he left money on the table but when you dig deeper did he really? You said it yourself, if all goes well this will be a one year deal. Cespedes is betting on himself that he'll have a big year and then go back into free agency in 2017 when the free agent class of hitters won't be nearly as good and he can really cash in. If he flops this year, which he won't, he can stay with the Mets and still collect another 50 million. As far as your sexy destination comment, slow down. If the rumors are true, and I believe they are, Cespedes reached out to the Yankees as well and was turned down. Cespedes wants to be in NYC, he knows he has some comfort level there so I think its a being in New York thing over a Mets thing. Still, like I said last week when it happened, a great move for the Mets and it was one that they HAD to make.
I see where your coming from and of course you make your points, but he did leave $25 mil if you go by what the Nationals had to offer, hopefully, like you said, Cespedes who is betting on himself, will have a good year and then he can leave for greener pastures in 2017. Hopefully he won't flop, but you never know he could get hurt. Again hopefully not.
As far the the Mets being a sexy destination, they are becoming just that. Like I said the Mets have come a long way from just a few years ago where they were mostly viewed as a joke around the league. No doubt Cespedes loved his time in NY and wanted to come back but once he realized that the Mets had no plans on bringing him back long term he probably did reached out to the Yankees but I believe if he had his choice he much prefer the Mets. I mean right now where would you rather play? Mets or Yankees? At the end of the day Cespedes was willing to leave $25 on the table, bet on himself, and come back to the Mets, I believe because he believed in the Mets.
