The New York Mets concluded another week of baseball in which they got swept away by the Pittsburgh Pirates and took 2 out of 3 to the lowly Washington Nationals. On Sunday Livian Hernandez was able to put the Nationals away with 7 scoreless innings for his 5th win of season, as the Mets continue to hang around despite being a team of the walking wounded. With a 2-4 week, the Mets manage to stay in the hunt despite losing JJ Putz and Jose Reyes for over a month. The list of the wounded just keeps growing for the Mets who now must get ready for a week of baseball in which they will face some very hitters. Up 1st will be the defending Champions who will come into CitiField for a 3 game set that starts off tomorrow with Johan Santana on the mound to take on the Fighting Phil's! It will be the 5th meeting between the 2 division rivals who earlier in May the Mets took 3 out of 4 from the Phils and in one of the games Santana bested the Phils 1-0, in a game where Santana went for 7 innings, giving up only 2 hits, and striking out 10 Phils for the victory.
After the Phils it's off too the New Yankee Stadium as the Subway series 2009 version gets underway with 3 at the Stadium.
Currently the Mets are in a mess when it comes to their roster situation which continues to grow. This week we learned that Jose Reyes will need some more time to get back when he tweaked his leg problem in the minors trying to get himself back to the big club. Right now Reyes status is unknown as far when he is to come back.
We also learned that JJ Putz will be out until late July with elbow problems, so far Putz's has not worked out like the Mets expected. The Mets also lost Angel Pagan and Ramon Martinez who was backing up Reyes this week, and John Maine was not up to par this week with a stomach virus that had him and Beltran sideline for a few days.
The bright spot for the Mets, if you want to call it, is that they got back Alex Cora who is now the everyday shortstop and Ryan Church who was back in the lineup yesterday. John Maine is supposedly feeling better these days as he will look to bounce back after suffering a bad outing to the hands of the lowly Nationals who beat Maine 7-1 on Saturday as Maine gave up all 7 runs in just 4 innings of work.
It will be a tough week for the Mets as they test themselves out vs 2 of the best offensive teams in baseball. Pitching win games and the Mets rotation is the only area where the injury bug hasn't effected them yet. The only starter not willing and able is Oliver Perez who was given a made up ailment just so that the Mets can vanish Perez to the DL for good. The Mets who are like last in the majors when it comes to the long ball, must now scrap for runs now that guys like Reyes and Delgado cannot be counted on for months.
