Yanks stay hot, sweeping the Tigers

The New York Yankees continue to win win win, this weekend it was the 1st place Detroit Tigers who came into Yankee Stadium as they measured themselves vs the Bronx Bombers in a battle of elites. But for the Tigers it was back to the drawing board as they found themselves being swept away by the Yanks to open up their 2nd half. What helped the Yankees in this one was the solid outings they got from their starting pitching, and the good timely hitting that helped sealed the series that could had gone either way. AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia & Joba Chamberlian all pitched well and the Yankee bullpen led by Phil Hughes held the Tigers at bay until it was Mariano time. Big Mo came in to save all 3 games in this one as the Yankees moved just a game back to the EAST leading Red Sox's who lost their series vs Roy Halladay and the Jays this weekend.

Like I said B4 all 3 games could had been won by the Tigers who fought and played just as hard as the Yankees did but it was the pinstripes who took the series and completed the sweep on Sunday which also celebrated the 63rd annual Old Timers day, the 1st at the new stadium. On Saturday the game was won in the 7th on a Alex Rodriguez homerun that barely made the seats in right field, it was of the cheapy variety that had Tiger starter Justin Verlander sheepishly grinning after he saw that the fly ball had just made the seats. I would had prefer if A-ROD would had hit a moon shot, said Verlander after the game, instead it was a Yankees Stadium deluxe special that did Verlander and the Tigers in on that day. Then on Sunday the Yanks struck in the 7th once again, with the game tied at 1, Mark Texiera went deep over the wall, and this one was no cheapy here as Texiera took allstar starter Edwin Jackson who had until then, was getting the job done. It was the final blow as Mariano came in for his 26th save of the season, as the brooms were on display. The Yanks quickly get themselves back on track after going into the break all wrong when they were swept by the Angels just a few days ago. It is back to business as the bombers now get ready for some more home cooking as the birds from Baltimore set off a 3 game series tonight, and then it's 4 with the Oakland A's.
Right now the Yankees are looking strong and ready to make a move, everyone is healthy and the pitching has been excellent as they start the 2nd half.
Let's see if by the end of the week the Yankees can overtake the Sox's who now cling to a 1 game lead as the pinstriper's look ready to make the leap, we will see!
