Free falling Mets are done.

After the ALLSTAR break, the Mets got back to playing ball again hoping for a turn of faith for a franchise that this year has been hit with the TSUNAMI of injuries. It has been this way for what seems to be the entire season for the Mets who have seen a rash of injuries completely knock them out of contention. Most importantly it has been the key core players who have been put out of commission for much to long.

With the exception of David Wright who is the only everyday core player still out there, each day the Mets rosters continues to weaken. You would think that by now some of these injured players would be back on the team, but instead you see the DL posse keep increasing as the season goes along.

The 2nd half of the season opened up on Thursday with a 4 games series vs the Atlanta Braves and what you saw from the Mets was more of the same, more injuries, more bad plays, and more bad breaks for the Mets who opened up the 2nd half 6 and a half games back. After losing the 1st 2 games, the Mets manage to win the only game of the series when Johan Santana pitched and won, but that was it as the Mets went on to lose 3 out of 4 to the Braves. In the series the Mets also lost 2 more players when on Friday Gary Sheffield who went down lame when he pulled a leg muscle when retrieving a double in the outfield, then on Sunday you saw starter Fernando Nieve pulled a leg muscle of his own when he was running down to 1st base trying to beat out an infield hit only to be called out and then carried off the field.

You think you seen it all but for the Mets it only gets worst, they are simply a injury waiting to happen. After every game Jerry Manuel is offen seen in laughter as he tries to make light of the situation, but to some Met fans this display of trying to laugh it off is not well received, but really what is there to say? This is Metland where the negativity seems to linger as if this was it's place, and who is this to blame? is it Omar for creating this mess? is it Jerry Manuel fault for having the players go down on his watch? Maybe you can point the finger at the Mets training staff because the Mets can't simply stay healthy, or Maybe it is the SI curse? I just don't know. Maybe we should call it the CitiField Curse? Whatever it is I don't know, the misfortunes are unreal, this is the season that has gone to pieces, the season that never was.

Before the allstar break the Mets had won the last 2 games and everyone thought that maybe now with the much needed break finally here, that some of the players would soon be back and that things would soon start to turn around, maybe, maybe not. This season it has been a different kind of suffering for Mets fans who started to get all exciting when Omar got K-ROD and JJ Putz during the off-season as it looked like the bullpen woes from the past 2 seasons was a thing of the past, that with a brand new stadium a new Era in Mets baseball was finally here, but so far it has been a house of horrors for Met fans who's roster continues to let them down.

4 games into the 2nd half and its more of the same, not only that now the Phillies have won 8 in a row and have now pushed the Mets 9 games back in the standings, practically eliminating any hopes of a possible run at the defending champs. The Phillies who were going through their own tough stretch not to long ago have begun to play like the championship team they really are, Raul Ibanez is back in the lineup after missing some 3 weeks, and the rest of the Phillie's MVP's Utley, Howard and Rollins are all healthy and knocking the ball all over the place. The Phillies pitching's has also picked it up as they look ready to run away with the EAST for good.

For the Mets and the rest of the competition in the NL East, it is time too start thinking of 2010, especially the Mets who right now look like a team that can't wait for 2010. The Mets never had a chance once the DL list began to piled up, imagine if the Phillies had to deal with the loses of Rollins, Utley and Howard, or if the Yankees didn't have Texiera, A-ROD and Jeter, now think about that, you think any team that loses their core players would be able to survive and contend? not even the Yankees would be able to survive such mass destruction to key players, especially everyday players. What you would get is a team that would be last in homeruns, and a team that would be leading the league in being shout out, 5 times in the last 13 games the Mets have been blanked, what you would get is a team who's offense would be hard press to score runs on a regular basis. Not much has gone right for the Mets this season, so it is time to start planning for the 2010 season. For too long the Mets were hanging around and staying within striking distance but once Carlos Beltran went down it was all over, time has run out on the Mets, at least there will be no last minute collapse this season.
