Game 1 of the 2009 WS went to the NL as the Defending Champs from Philadelphia came up with an impressive & dominating showing over the leaders from the AL. On this night Clfff Lee outperformed everyone on the big stage including his former Indians teammate C.C. Sabathia. He went on to pitch 9 brilliant innings striking out 10 Yankees, walking none, in route to a complete game mastery over those damn Yankees.
From the very 1st inning it was Lee who took control of the Yankees offensive attack keeping their bats quite the entire game. He did his part and so did Chase Utley who broke a scoreless game by taking Sabathia deep for his 1st of 2 solo homers in the 3rd, it was a typical Utley corner shot that Met fans have become accustomed of seeing that barely made it over the wall, 3 inning's later he struck again, this one a long blast that gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead, as Lee was able to cruise the rest of the way as the Yankees were never able put together much of a threat.
The ACLS MVP C.C. Sabathia did pitched well enough for the win allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits, but the 2 mistakes to Utley were enough on a night where Cliff Lee was just out of this world. Late in the game the Phillies opened things up by scoring 2 more in the 8th, and 2 more in the 9th, for the 6-1 game 1 victory.
Now we move on to a game 2 where Pedro Martinez will be on the hill tonight trying to put the Yankees in a 0-2 hole. The old righty will look to shine vs his old tormentors who have handled him better then any other team he has faced to the point where he has called the Yankees his Daddy's. The Phillies will be hoping that Pedro can give them 5 to 6 solid innings and a chance to win, & the Yankees must be patience on Pedro if they are to beat him and even up the series.
I expect the Yanks to score runs vs Pedro, but if the Phillies can get off 1st & match the Yankees run per run, I feel that late in the game the Phillies have the edge. Can Burnett contain the Philadelphia offense? we will see tonight.
Tonight's game will be full out excitement as Pedro is back in NY to visit the new stadium for the 1st time, while the Yankees are down in a series for the 1st time in these playoffs.
The Pressure will be on the Yankees to win tomorrow as the they turn to A.J. Burnett for the pressure start. No way do the Yankees want to find themselves down 0-2 heading into Philadelphia, sure they can still win the series, but then again against these Phillies, those chances seem unlikely.
This is what baseball is all about, & how can I not root for Pedro tonight?

Oh Freddy. You silly silly goose. You are pretty, run of the mill, jump on whatever is flowing type of guy aren't you?
The Yankees went from being heavy favorites, in your own words, to:
"No way do the Yankees want to find themselves down 0-2 heading into Philadelphia, sure they can still win the series, but then again against these Phillies, those chances seem unlikely."
Unlikely? Really. So these teams play ONE game and it's all over huh? I have to keep remembering that this isn't the NFL.
How could you not root for Pedro? I find it easy for someone like you to root against Pedro. 1 out of 4 good seasons in Queens? That was a lot of money wasted there. 53 million dollars is no laughing matter. It's as easy as rooting against Carl Pavano for 40 million wasted.
THIS WAS SO ATROCIOUS I HAD TO PUT IT ON A SEPERATE POST:
"but if the Phillies can get off 1st & match the Yankees run per run, I feel that late in the game the Phillies have the edge."
WOW FREDDY. THAT HAS TO BE THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I'VE EVER SEEN YOU WRITE.
You write some things that make me laugh but I think you once again don't know anything about a guy by the name of Mariano Rivera at the end of our bullpen in those late games. How could you give the Phillies the edge late in a game with Mo around.
I am starting to agree with Peter Gammons. Mariano might be the best player in the modern era. I reserve room to think that Jeter is the most intelligent baseball player in the modern era but Mariano is definitely the greatest pitcher to grace the game.
But let's not include him when it comes to late game situations because the Phillies have the edge there.
Here we go again Danny,
1st, did I say the Yankees were heavy favorites in this series, or in the Angels series? in fact, in the Angels series I even went on to say that the only reason the Yanks were the favorites was because of the home field advantage.
2 so your telling me that if the Yanks were to have gone down 0-2 to a team like the Phillies that you would have not been seriously concerned?
And about Pedro, you want to compare the guy to Pavano? Please I like to leave it at that but knowing you I know you will be back for more, 1st I like Pedro, always have, so what if it didn’t work out for him & the Mets, he was still liked by Met fans & he liked being a Met & it was just unfortunate he was only able to give us 1 good year, very unlike your boy Pavano, even Yesterday b4 the game he spoke about how he wished he could be doing what he is getting ready to do, for the Mets, his time here did not go as plan, but he still brought a lot more to the table then Pavano.
About the Phillies having a lead late in games, yes I give them the edge, (if they have the lead) that is what I meant to say there, & about Rivera, didn’t I say that if the Yankees get a lead after 7 that it is pretty much over?
Silly Goose, stay with the program & stop trying to create shit that’s not even there.
In terms of disappointment, yes Pavano and Pedro are both disappointments. Pedro to the tune of 13 million more for the same amount of time. You like Pedro? Who the fuck cares? What does that have to do with performance?
"so your telling me that if the Yanks were to have gone down 0-2 to a team like the Phillies that you would have not been seriously concerned?"
Who said I wouldn't be but I wouldn't throw the towel like a pessimistic fan like you would.
I'm not creating what's not there, I'm going by what you're writing. You can't come back and say, oh this is what I meant to say and then blame me. ("About the Phillies having a lead late in games, yes I give them the edge, (if they have the lead) that is what I meant to say there."
Silly. Silly. Goose. You're it.
