A few days ago NY sports radio station WFAN was stuck on 1 topic, all callers wanted to talk about Derek Jeter and his 3000 hit homerun ball that fan Christian Lopez caught. For 3 hours I heard callers after caller give their opinions on what they would had done if they were that lucky fan who was in the right place like on that historic Saturday afternoon.
Christian Lopez was just another fan attending the game waiting to see if on this day Derek Jeter would be part of Yankee history, and all of a sudden he had history in his hands, seconds later he is whisked away by the Yankee security team, led into the guys in suits, with everything happening at a blitz pace he now had a decision to make. Here is Christian Lopez on the spot with his favorite team the NY Yankees and they want that ball. Soon after Christian Lopez was squeezed into the Yankee booth with Michael Kay, still in the moment, and on the spot for all to see, when asked by MK what his plans were going to be with the prized ball, Christian Lopez answered,. (I will give it back to Mr. Jeter, because he deserves it), the look on MK face was of disbelief,. MK (really?) Yes really,.. Christian Lopez was ready to give it all up for nothing, lucky for him he was taken care of by the Yankees who had to give back. But really kid, haven't you seen what these balls go for?
Moments later, (right on cue), the YES network ran it's 1st of many ads selling memorabilia of Jeter's recent accomplishments, this went on and on throughout the game. And what did Christin Lopez get for his good deed? he got some bats and balls, got to meet Jeter after the game, and 4 seats for the rest of the year. In the end Christian Lopez gets a fraction of what he would had got, if only he would of held on to the ball that had big money value in it. Unfortunately everything happened so fast for Christian Lopez that his decision making clearly were miss-calculated, not even his father who was their with him was able to give the kid some wise advice, it was a total choke job. Now he is the talk of the town, for the good and the bad, now making the rounds on talk shows, trying to get paid.
Christian Lopez should had learned from the team he follows as a fan of the NY Yankees, it's all about the money kid, when Derek Jeter had his contract negotiated during the offseason, he squeezed the Yankees for every penny, Lopez didn't. Christian Lopez was put on the spot and in the end was not clutch like Derek Jeter.
