The best team on opening day notched another win onto their belt as the NY Mets beat their divisional foes and hardest competition the Washington Nationals to improve to 35-19 on opening day.
Last year the Nationals were the Mets daddies beating them handily 15 times in their 19 meetings, but this is a new year and the Mets look poise to turn things around. Early on it was a pitchers duel as the Nats prize offseason acquisition Max $cherzer took to the hill vs Bartolo Colon much to the displeasure of Mets fans who ripped manager Terry Collins for the decision to give the ball to Colon instead of Harvey or deGrom, I had no problem with the decision it's just 1 game people.
The game was scoreless until the 4th when Colon gave up a solo HR to Bryce Harper for the 1-0 lead, it stay that way until things got sloppy for the Nats in the 6th when shortstop Ian Desmond made the 1st of his 2 errors when he called off 2nd baseman Dan Uggla with 2 outs and Granderson on 1st, the ball dropped setting up a 2nd and 3rd situation for Lucas Duda who cashed in for the Mets 1st hit of the season, a 2 run single as the Mets now led 2-1.
The Mets added another run in the 7th thanks again too Desmond who spiked Juan Lagares grounder on the throw to 1st, Travis d'Arnaud than followed with a tripled scoring Lagares for the 3-1 lead. The bullpen took over in the 7th for Bartolo Colon, replaced by Carlos Torres who had a scoreless inning, he was than followed by Juerys Familia who had a scoreless 8th, but in the 9th the Mets had some issues when closer Jenrry Mejia warming up in the bullpen, felt elbow discomfort and could not come in for the possible save, in came former National Jerry Blevins making his Mets debut in to face Bryce Harper who flied deep to right for the 1st out, Terry Collins then called for veteran Buddy Carlyle to get the final 2 outs earning his 1st career save and the 3-1 win.
Colon went 6 innings giving up 3 hits one being the HR to Harper while striking out 8. The Mets had only 5 hits, 2 from Lucas Duda 2 more from d'Arnaud and 1 from Michael Cuddyer, it was enough for the Mets to win again on opening day. So as the great Howie Rose likes to say...
