The weekend is here and that means Friday night baseball as the weekend series gets underway, NY baseball in all under control as the Yankees still have a hold on 1st place and on the other side of town the Mets have been on a roller coaster ride that has put them straight to the top the NL East. Still plenty of baseball remains as the AL East is getting tighter and now the Mets are in it.
Lets break it down!
In the AL East the NY Yankees have kept their pace of winning baseball, yes the win just keep on coming and last night they made it another series win by beating the woeful Red Sox's. Comebacks are a norm with this team and no lead is safe when facing the Yankees, series after series it's win win win, at times they resemble a slow pitch softball team with the way they easily come back and score runs, one minute I'm checking in on the Yankees and I'm all giddy cause they are down by 5 runs but 10 minutes later I switch the channel back on them and they have put up 7 runs and taken control. Lately this has been theme.
Their series tonight starts vs the new look Toronto Blue Jays who come into town to play the 1st of many games, 13 games to be exact remain on the schedule between the 2 teams and at the moment the Yanks have a 4 and a half game lead, 6 on the lost column. The Jays come in winners of 5 in a row and 8-2 in the last 10, red hot! This is one scary lineup leaders in MLB in runs scores, tonight's starter Nathan Eovaldi will have his has full for sure as he comes in with an 11-2 record. Eovaldi has been some what of a savior this year but when you look deeper into his numbers they seem suspect. In 117 innings he has given up 142 hits, teams are hitting an even 300 against him, a recipient of plenty of runs support. Tonight he will have to negociate the mashing Jays lineup and to me this looks like a recipe for disaster.
In the 1st 6 game between the 2 teams this season the Blue Jays have the upper hand with a 4-2 record on the Yanks, the only division team the Yankees have a losing record too, in those 6 games Eovaldi has yet to face the Jays. This is just 1 of 13 games and for tonight it's the marquee matchup for MLB. For the Jays they have to be looking at this series like the Mets vs the Nationals series this pass week, a sweep won't put them over the top but boy will it get them some press. It has been over 2 decades since the Jays sniffed the playoffs so this team and the fanbase is hungry!
It's R.A Dickey vs Nathan Eovaldi! Troy Tulowitski, Josh Donalson, Edwin Encarnacion and Joey BATS! come into Yankees Stadium tonight looking to continue to play that good baseball that has put them back on the map.
As for the Mets, winners of 6 straight things look good, after some minor moves in which Sandy Alderson finally did something to improve the team a big bat was still missing. Than came July 29th as the Mets were playing the SD Padres when in the middle of the game we got news, Sandy Alderson had made another trade and Carlos Gomez was coming to the Mets in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores, the Mets had a big bat and the Mets seemed for real.
But things got strange real quick as social media got around the entire stadium, watching on TV we all knew the happenings but the Mets on the field were the only one's that didn't know what we all knew. Things only got more strange when Wilmer Flores had just received a standing ovation letting him know of the trade, he was than seen in tears on the field and it looked like the Mets were now torturing Flores for no apparent reason, GET HIM OUT OF THE GAME! It was the Mets being the Mets, not only would the Mets go on to lose the game but the post game report just got a lot interesting as we were now looking for some explanation by Terry Collins and the Mets.
Terry Collins said he knew of nothing and than it was Sandy Alderson's turn to give his side of the story, there he was telling us the trade was never official, and now we were all let down. According to Sandy and the Mets medical issues was the deal breaker, Sandy Alderson had kept his receipt and now he wanted to make a return on Gomez. The Joke of baseball the NY Mets! Things would only get worse as Carlos Gomez would eventually get traded to the Houston Astros so of course we were all thinking it had to be because of money.
The very next game things would only get worst, with the Mets up 7-5 and 2 outs in the 9th heavy rains came down to put a stoppage to the parade, after a 45 minutes delay Closer Jeurys Familia was back on the mound trying to finish off the win and the save, but after a long at bat by Derek Norris a bloop followed, the rain began to fall again and then another hit by Matt Kemp, the stage was now set for the big punch to the gut as Justin Upton delivered a 3 run bomb! as the Padres now led 8-7. After the 3rd out was finally recorded it was another rain delay, this one for 2 hours and 44 minutes but when action resumed the Mets went down 1,2,3 and they had lost a game in which they were up 7-1.
Something had to be done to erase the bad taste and on Friday as the trading deadline was about to reach it's final hour Sandy Alderson went for it, the Mets got Yoenis Cespedes and now we waited for the official word cause no way were the Mets going to screw this up again. At the end of the day it all worked out, not only did the Mets get a better player but Wheeler and Flores were still on the team.
Things were now looking up, and up next was a big series vs the 1st place Washington Nationals who had a 3 game lead on the Mets. Matt Harvey took the ball and did his thing but the game went into extra innings tied at 1 a piece, a lost would had put the Mets 4 games back but in the 12th Mets folk hero Wilmer Flores capped off the night going deep for the walk off HR and the 2-1 win!
Now the Mets were setup and the beginning of the end of the Washington Nationals was coming, Yoenis Cespedes is now making his Mets debut and on the mound is Jacob deGrom, deGrom allows 2 1st innings runs but the Mets came back to tie it in the 7th when Lucas Duda went deep for his 2nd HR of the game. In the 8th with Granderson on 2nd and 1 out, Yoenis Cespedes came to the plate but was intentionally walked by manager Matt Williams to set up the double play and a lefty vs lefty situation, but the lefty was Lucas Duda with the 2 HR's, an opposite field doubled followed and the Mets won 3-2! A game out of 1st!
By Sunday night it was national television, Noah Syndergaard vs Jordan Zimmerman on ESPN, Anthony Rendon got the Nats off quick when he led off the game with a HR but by the bottom of the 3rd inning the Mets had sock it to the Nats with a 3 HR's inning, Curtis Granderson gave the Mets a 2-1 lead and Daniel Murphy upper decked it! for a back to back, to make it 3-1, after a hit by Cespedes it was Lucas Duda with the 3rd HR in the inning and it was all she wrote. Noah Syndergaard went 8 innings and mission complete, a sweep of the Nationals and now the Mets had a share of 1st.
The week was capped off by 3 more wins to the Marlins and here we are today in 1st place! a game and a half up on the Nationals. Right now the Mets are trending, only the Toronto Blue Jays are at this level . Tonight the Mets open up a series vs the TB Rays as Jacob deGrom takes the ball as the Mets look to make it a lucky 7 in a row.
Yup right now the Mets are scary team, and I say the hell with a wildcard, let's take the division!
It's Friday night baseball and the excitement continues into the month of August, so Let's go Mets!
