The NY baseball scene has the Monday blues, the Mets and the Yankees did not represent this weekend and now it's time to break it down. It started out well for the team from Queens when they came back 3 times in their series opener vs the TB Rays. The comeback win was started by Juan Uribe who 1st tied it in the 7th with his 3rd HR since becoming a Met, in the 8th Daniel Murphy homered and tied it a 2nd time, then in the 9th with the Mets down once again, it was Michael Conforto who doubled too tie the game even for a 3rd straight inning, 2 batters later the legend of Wilmer Flores gave the Mets the game winner and now the Mets had their 7th win in a row.
But that would be the only win.
On Saturday Curtis Granderson led off the game with a HR and Lucas Duda drove in 2 more in the 1st to give Noah Syndergaard and the Mets the early 3-0 lead, it looked as if the Mets well on their way to their 8th in a row but Syndergaard who has been awful on the road would be bad in Tamba. Syndergaard gave it up quickly with 4 runs in the bottom 1st and by the 4th inning Eva Longoria would send him to the early showers with a HR that gave the Rays a 5-4 lead and win. The Mets had let one get away and that was end of the streak.
Mean while in NY the Yankees and Blue Jays were on their 2nd game of their series, the Yankees had just come off losing the 1st game on Friday in 10 innings when Joey Bats homered gave the Jays their 6th win in a row, now in a scoreless game through 5, Justin Smoak smokes Ivan Nova with the bases loaded breaking it open as the Jays now had won 2 from the Yanks and their 7th in a row.
On Sunday the Mets still had a chance to bounce back and win the rubber game, a chance to come back home with a solid 5-1 road trip, they handed Colon 3 early runs in the 2nd and things were looking as plan but Colon would fail to do his part and by the 7th with the game tied at 4 Richie Schaffer homered off Colon for his 3rd hit of the game and the eventual game winner as the Mets had let another one get away. A what could had been weekend for the Mets had turned sour.
Back in NY the Yanks would go on to laid an egg in front of the home fans as the Jays held the Yanks scoreless for a 2nd straight game to complete the sweep. It was now 8 in a row for the Jays and the hottest team in the majors is now just a game and a half behind the Yanks.
The Yanks have been playing some great ball but they just happened to pick the wrong time to go on the skids. I don't think Yankees fans should start to panic just yet but the Jays are rolling and they will meet again this weekend in Toronto for 3 more games. The Yankees need to get it together cause the Blue Jays have the momentum to take over the division. The Jays are now 7-2 and 10 more games between the 2 teams remain. The Mets come back home tonight to start a 4 game series vs the Rockies, hopefully the Mets can get some of that good old home cooking and get back on the right track in front of the home crowd.
NY teams have the Monday baseball blues but both teams are still in 1st place, so no need to panic, no not yet.

Well, I'm going to be optimistic here, first with the Mets. They bounced back today with a win over the Rockies so I think they'll be ok, they did face a couple of good pitchers in Tampa and now they get the Rockies at home before getting the Pirates this weekend in what should be a marquee matchup at Citi. After that they Baltimore, Phillies, Rockies and Red Sox...not exactly a murders row. Add to that the upcoming return of David Wright and Matz and things are looking good for the Amazing Mets.
As for the Yankees, I'm not stressing out over this. You knew that they would hit a rough patch and its happening now while Toronto is tearing it up. Yes, the Yankees got swept but again I'm going to look at the positive and I was very, very impressed at how well the starting pitching looked all weekend. Girardi left Nova in too long on Saturday but he was good up til that point, Eavoldi looked great on Friday and Tanaka pitched well on Sunday. I'm confident that they'll pick up the offense and if the starting pitching keeps going like that I like our chances. I know that you love the term "softball lineup" that is Toronto right there, that 1-5 that they're rolling out is scary but with that said I don't see them keeping that pace and after Price none of their pitchers scare me. They're playing with swagger right now but remember its August 10th not October 10th.
Yea nice bounce back win for the Mets, hopefully they can win this series and get ready for the Pirates, I'm really excited to see how we match up vs Pittsburgh, there should be a lot of energy going into that weekend series. Yea the Mets have a lot weak teams after that but they don't do well on the road so I still worry. Still I have a lot more confidence that this new look team, with all the others coming back, will get it done. This is a unit.
As for The Yankees...they do need to score some runs and start winning, you could see that the sweep of the Jays knocked a little shine off them. You said the Mets and Pirates should be the marquee matchup for this weekend but that will still be the Yanks and Jays again. That series could be the changing off the guard.
Will be checking out Severino tonight.
YO I cant believe how things have changed in just a week, the Mets are on fire, I'm more excited than the 2006 team, the pitching is amazing and Terry Collins has lot more flexible with the lineup. And they have Wright and Matz coming back. Just saw the Dodgers and Kershaw up 3-0 in the 8th, looks like the Mets will be up 3 and a half up on the Nationals.
As for the Yankees, man it's the total opposite, up 4 and a half games just a week ago and now out of 1st. Crazy how the Blue Jays continue to win and the Yankees continue to lose. I don't know man this Yankee team looks more like the team I thought it would be on offense this year, The Yankees have hit the skids big time! I know the Yankees pitched well in the last series but they were lucky, if they don't win tomorrow I can see the Jays blowing them out big time in Toronto and winning 3 more this weekend.
It's been an interesting week to say the least. Like I said before if the Mets don't win the division I would be shocked, they have a cake walk schedule. Let's see their recent games, they beat the Nats but didn't have to face Scherezer, they beat the Marlins and didn't have to face Fernandez, they dropped 2 of 3 in Tampa and are beating the hapless Rockies now. They do have Pittsburgh this weekend so that's a tougher test but then have Baltimore, Rockies, Phillies and Red Sox. Not exactly a murders row right there so I see the Mets padding their lead.
As for the Yankees, they hit a rough patch. It happens to every team, no one expected them to keep that pace up all season. They'll turn it around, its just a matter of time. How exactly were the Yankees lucky? Not sure where you're going with that. Toronto is rolling right now but again I'm going to look at the positive, Toronto in 4 games vs. the Twins scored 26 runs, in 2 games thus far vs. Oakland have score 14 but in 3 games with the Yankees scored 10 runs. The Yankees pitching have been great, just need the offense to get going again.
2 good wins by the Yanks, if they can pull off the sweep today they are back on the saddle.
As for the Mets, 2 tough loses, lucky for us the Nats are choking.
Well, all in all a very good weekend for the Yankees. Huge win on Friday night with Beltran providing the late game heroics, then on Saturday Tanaka going the distance in shutting down the Jays. Today was a tough loss for Severino and the Yankees, if Beltran doesn't lose that one in the sun who knows what happens. Like I said, a good weekend - won 3 of the last 4, the pitching continues to be great and now the Yankees go home for 10 straight and the Yankees play 20 of there next 26 games in the Bronx.
As for the Mets...what can you say. Couple of tough losses and one ugly one. Luckily for the Mets the Nationals can't get out of there own way and the Mets schedule for the is loaded with one cake walk after another for the next few weeks.
Tough lose, Severino looked good, looks like a keeper, I been surprised that the Yankee pitching has held up, Toronto's has good pitching as well, it's going to be a race, either way both the Yanks and Jays should make the playoffs. 20 of the next 26 at home? thats a cake walk.
Mets took a step back and got swept but lose no ground, you can call it lucky, I'm surprised Matt Williams is still managing the Nationals. I know the Mets have a supposed cake walk of a schedule but I don't buy that... Yes the competition is mediocre but 19 of the next 25 games are on the road and the Mets are a 21-34 team on the road. This is baseball not the NBA. These are the Mets, I'm excited about what the Mets have going but i'm not sleeping.
Severino has been impressive thus far and he's only going to get better. Good win last night for the Yankees after that scary scene with that kid getting hit in the face.
Yes, the Mets have a lot of road games but they're playing the Rockies, Phillies, Red Sox, not exactly the big time teams. I can appreciate you trying to curb your enthusiasm but they're the team to to beat in the east.
