It's time to talk a little baseball.
At the moment the hot topic in the NY baseball scene is Yoenis Cespedes. It's crazy but here we are on Jan 22nd and Cespedes is still looking for a team. The most dynamic player in this off-season free agency class is still available.
At the moment there is an offer on the table from the Washington Nationals, a 5 year deal, meanwhile the Mets faithful are still hoping that somehow some way the Mets can bring back Yeonis Cespedes.
If they do it's just not going to be on a 5 year deal.
I would love to bring Cespedes back but the more I think about it I just don't see it working out, that's because long term it is not something the Mets want to do and Cespedes has said he is looking for 6 years.
The Mets already have Curtis Granderson in RF for another year and the future in LF is Michael Conforto, that leaves CF kind of open at the moment but the Mets are willing to go with Juan Lagares who defensively is gold glove material but no where near Cespedes with the bat. This is where I see the Mets going with into the 2016 season and I am ok with this course.
Yeonis Cespedes did a nice job playing CF for the Mets but let's face it he is better suited playing one of the corner OF. But if Cespedes is to come back to the Mets in 2016 CF is where he will be playing.
If Cespedes wants to come back to the Mets he will have to take a 1 or 3 year type of deal because that is where the NY Mets seem to be standing at. The word on the streets is that Yeonis wants to come back and play for the Mets, that he enjoyed his time last season and is willing to come back on some sort of deal that the Mets will be willing to deal with. Only time will tell where Yeonis Cespesdes ends up. The next 48 hours should be interesting.
So far the Mets have added a few players to their 2016 roster, Antonio Bastardo recently signed to be the lefty out of the bullpen, he is no Aroldis Chapman who I wanted so bad on the Mets but he is a more than serviceable guy to have coming from the left side. Bastardo will join Jerry Blevins who did a nice job in his short time for the Mets last season until he got injured and never came back.
The Mets bring Blevins back on a $4 million 1 year deal, a deal where I think the Mets overpaid. Like I said I wanted Aroldis Chapman blowing guys away for the Mets but Chapman wound up with the Yankees and I have to move on. Hopefully Blevins and Bastardo can do a nice job as the lefty specialist.
Another guy the Mets are bringing back for another year is Bartolo Colon, to me this was a good move. Bartolo will fill in until Zack Wheeler can come back somewhere in the middle of the season and join the rotation. For now Bart takes the ball every 5 games and that's not a bad thing.
I like the Neil Walker over Daniel Murphy move, I think both Walker and Murphy are similar players but defensively Walker is an upgrade for the Mets. I think Met fans will like Neil Walker when it is all said and done. As the 4th OF the Mets signed lefty hitting OF Alejandro De Aza to kind of platoon with Lagares in CF. He is nothing special but nice veteran to have off the bench and filling in once a week.
At the end off the 2015 season I've said that the Yankees will sign someone to about 3 years too about $40 mil which would had been an off year for the Yankees when it comes to signing free agents, but so far it hasn't happened.
So far the NY Yankees have added players to their rosters by making a few trades and 2 of them have been steals. 1st they acquired Starlin Castro from the Cubs for a bag of balls and then they stole Aroldis Chapman from the Reds for a few unknowns. Not sure how the Yankees were able to pulled this off but they did. They got 2 all stars for pretty much nothing, Castro is only 26 and you can pencil him in as the 2nd baseman for the 2016 season, no more Stephen Drew and no more Rob Refsnyder talk. Starling Castro is the Yankee 2nd baseman.
The Yankees also added OF Aaron Hicks who should fill in as their 4th OF and takes the place of the departed Chris Young. Hicks is a switch hitter who is looking to get his career back on track. As a 4th OF I think he is a nice replacement.
But the big steal has to be Aroldis Chapman who comes in and joins Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller to form a 3 headed monster out of the bullpen. On paper this has to be the best bullpen in baseball but will the Yankees come into the 2016 season with all 3 on the team?
Some are saying that another move is in the works to try and get a starting pitcher but if nothing is done and Yankees come into the 2016 season with these 3 coming out of the bullpen LOOK OUT!

Been waiting on a new post so glad you're back. Looks like the Mets just signed Cespedes to a 3 year deal with an opt out after 1. Makes sense for both sides, Cespedes could have a monster year and bounce next season when the free agent class will not be nearly as deep as this year's and the Mets get a full year of production from a motivated Cespedes. Right now, on paper I'm really liking the Mets, Cubs and Giants in the NL with the D'Backs and Nationals as the 2 wild cards but that's a conversation for late March. Getting back to my original point, I really like what the Mets have done thus far...nothing too overwhelming just little moves to shore up the team. Walker is a solid player and De Aza & Bastardo are nice depth pick ups for them. If I'm a Mets fan I'm going in wth very high expectations for 2016.
On to the Yankees...I've been telling you since the end of the last season that the Yankees won't do much of anything free agent wise and sure enough they haven't. Love the trade for Chapman, that bullpen shortens the game to 6 innings now for the Yankees because no one and I mean NO ONE can fuck with the trio of Betances, Miller and Chapman. The Castro deal is another good one for the Yankees, give them a solid infield of Tex, Castro, Didi and Headley and I think the Hicks deal might prove to be a real steal for the Yanks. The starting pitching is a bit of a concern but you have to hope that the starters can stay healthy and give the team a solid year.
Only a month away til pitchers and catchers report. April can't get here soon enough.
Wow Cespedes just signed on for 3 years 75mil.
Oh Man I can't believe the Mets were able to bring back Cespedes on their terms, like you said this deal is perfect for both sides but more for the Mets, Cespedes will be motivated and that's always a good thing so it's good for the Mets. To me Yeonis Cespedes was the best talent out there to be had of all the free agents, because of this I didn't see the Mets bringing back Cespedes because I thought it was going to take a 6 year deal and the Mets were not going there.
Right now the Mets are all in. Expectations are high with this move by the Mets. Really loving Sandy Alderson pulling off this move this late in the season. I did not see that happening.
The Yankees not signing anyone is a real shocker, come on, even you have to be shocked LOL, pulling off Castro and Chapman that was their big deals. How can you not love the Chapman trade, you already know what I think about that guy, he's a beast. I'm hoping the Yankees will eventually trade one of those guys away. If the Yankees go into the 2016 season with this trio intact I have to give them the AL East.
Well, I hate to burst your bubble but I'll be in Nevada in March before the season starts and I'm putting money on the Mets and giants to win the world series so that's like the kiss of death...LOL.
