When it comes to the NY teams both the Mets and Yankees are technically still in it, both are playing 500 ball, the Mets at 47-41, 6 games out of the 1st to the Nationals, and the Yankees at 41-41, in 4th place, but only 7 and a half games out of the 1st place Orioles.
Those are the numbers but only the Mets can be looked on as a possible playoff team. The Yankees on the other hand have only shown you that they are too inconsistence and can't be taken seriously.
Throughout the 1st half the Yankees starting pitching has struggled and injuries always play a part. A strong 1st half by Carlos Beltran has been the only surprise but others key contributors have underperformed. The back of baseball card performers like AROD and Teixiera have not come close to their 2015 numbers and that have set the Yankees back.
What the Yankees have is 3 great relievers, 2 of which may be gone in 2 weeks. Than you have Didi Gregorius but other than that the NY Yankees don't have much to get excited about. They are as stale as it gets and it is time to make some changes.
Now when you look at the NY Mets injuries have crippled their chances, but the Mets have managed to hang in thanks to their 3 all stars. Yeonis Cespedes, Jeurys Familia and Noah Syndergaard are the team MVP's.
Still the Mets are in it and they will need guys like Neil Walker, Asdrubal Cabrerra, Bartolo Colon and Addison Reed to continue their 1st half numbers.
The Mets will also need better showings from players like Alejandro De Aza and Antonio Bartardo 2 who have stunk up the joint in the 1st half. Bastardo signed a 2 year deal to help solidifying the lefty situation in the pen but so far Bastardo has been a big disappointment, and De Aza is on the verge of being release just like Chris Young in 2014 and John Mayberry Jr. in 2015.
But when you talk about disappointments no one has been more of a letdown than Matt Harvey. I 1st called for a Cy Young season out of Matt Harvey in my season preview but we have yet to see the Dark Knight in 2016 and now he's out for the season. Matt Harvey has stunk it up big time and was nothing more but a 5th starter, but I was hoping for a better 2nd half and now Matt Harvey can't be counted on.
You can believe Harvey's injuries if you want but to me it feels more like a business decision collaborated by both the Mets and Scott Boras. To me there is something more going on with Matt Harvey but that's just me. The way I see it, Matt Harvey image and stock is falling and the Mets and Boras needed to save it from falling even further. All I know is that in his last start Harvey was throwing 98mph and he didn't look hurt to me. The Mets could not count on Matt Harvey so it was time to make a move and move on. For now the Mets will have to count on Logan Verrett to fill in.
If the Mets are going to make a run guys like Michael Conforto will have to come back from the minors and pick up things with the bat. They will have to count on Jose Reyes and Curtis Granderson at the top of the order for runs and energy.
It won't be easy but the Mets can still win the division, at the moment they are a wildcard team but plenty of baseball still remains. Like any team the Mets will need a few things to go their way and keeping Yeonis Cespedes and Noah Syndergaard healthy will be big. Cespedes is already dealing with some squad issues, and in his last start Noah Syndergaard had to come out of the game with a dead arm. Hopefully the few days off was just what they needed but with the Mets you keep your fingers cross.
Now back to the Yankees, in a couple of weeks they will have to do something that they haven't done in 2 decades and become sellers. If the Yankees want to keep it real that's what they have to do.
Time for the Yankees to be upfront with their fans.
Time to move on and cut Aaron Hicks, time to let go of AROD and cut him too. WTF Yankees?
Time to bring up Luis Severino, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez and take your lumps and see what you got.
Time to get creative and move some old furniture, time to get rid of old faces like Brett Gardner and get whatever you can.
No more Carlos Beltran, no more Brain McCann, no more C.C. Sabathia, this is not the future.
No more Nick Goody, Anthony Swarzak, Nick Rumbelow and Kirby Yates.
Small changes have already begun, last week I called out Nathan Evoldi and he's already coming out of the bullpen and that's fine cause to me Nathan Evoldi is not a starter you can build on. If Evoldi is going to find success it will have to be out of the pen where he can air out that 100mph fastball.
The Yankees can't go on with this stale product, is it time to be transparent and admit they are actually building and trying to get better.
The way I see it the only ones worth keeping and building around are is Didi Gregorious, Dellin Bentances, and you can throw in Starling Castro cause he's still young. If you want to keep Andrew Miller than keep him, but if some team is giving you something like a Kyle Schwarber trade him!
It's no secret but the Yankees need to keep it real with their fans. This team is not good to be pretending like they have a shot to make a run when your main bat in the lineup is Carlos Beltran.
The action resume tonight as the Yankees take on the Red Sox and the Mets start off on the road to face the Phillies.

Yankees need to make some moves, I've been saying it all year. What really bothers me about the Yankees situation right now is that Cashman wants to be a seller but Steinbrenner and Levine think the Yankees are still contenders. Cashman is coming at this as a baseball decision while the other guys are seeing it as a business decision which you can't blame them but you would hope that they see the light. Right now this is what I do, I'm going to be realistic here...I move Chapman, I would move Miller although it would really, really hurt to do so but the return you get for him would be major, I move Beltran to a contender that needs a bat. Gardener might get you something in a trade but he's a notoriously bad 2nd half player so he might not be able to get you as much. If you trade one your bullpen arms maybe you can convince a team to take a bad contract like Headley but then you limit what you can get back in return so we might be stuck with him. The rest of the guys you can't really trade like Alex, Tex, McCann, Elsbury and CC. CC had been pitching great for a bit but he seems to have come back to earth. I can see the Yankees trying to buy out CC last year if they can and possibly releasing Alex but that's a lot of money to eat. At this point I'm perfectly ok with them playing Hicks and Refsnyder every day and seeing what they can do playing every day. Like I said, my biggest fear is that Cashman is going to get overruled because these guys want to keep selling tickets and having people tune into YES.
If Cashman wants to sell and he is being held back by the Steinbrenner's and Levine than that's a tough situation to be in if your a GM. The Yankees have to do whatever they can and move on. They need to get creative and package some bad with some good and "like you said "move guys like Headley out of town. Hopefully the Yanks have the balls and at least cut AROD, and then do the same with Teixiera. Play Refsnyder and anyone you can bring up from the minors but I disagree with you on Aaron Hicks, he is just a 4th OF and 4th OF should not play everyday.
It would suck to be a Yankee fan and have the organization doing things to sell tickets when the majority of the fanbase, "the real fans" understands the situation and knows whats going on and have to eat this.
The Yankees are in the middle of a tough stretch and if they don't do well I think they'll start selling. I can see them moving guys like Pineda and Eovaldi as well. Cut ARod and Tex? Its so easy to say that when its not OUR money.
What good is keeping a guy like AROD around? A total waste of space, and for AROD? The Yankees need to do like the Dodgers, they release Carl Crawford with $35 million remaining on the contract. I don't expect the Yankees to cut both Tex and AROD, but they should, cause I don't see how keeping those guys around helps the team.
Anyone is expendable on the Yankees, like I said, only Betances or Didi, so even Castro in the right deal, can be dealt.
I agree but I don't know that the Yankees want to eat 42 million right now. I can see them doing it after the season though. Tex's contract is up after this season so right now you just ride it out and move on. Yeah, the only guys I would keep on the Yankees are Betances and Didi. Got 2 more week for the deadline so we'll see what happens.
Yankees trying to make Cashman's decision more difficult right now but still think they should sell on Chapman and Beltran.
Yup, Yankees winning a few games and now there is hope to make the WC. Cashman can't catch a break.
