Mets and Yankees at the midway point

It was a terrible start to the week this past Monday as both the Mets and Yanks would suffer devastating losses to get things underway.

It all started with the Mets up early to the Nationals as they had a 4-0 lead with Noah Syndergaard on the mound as I though to myself this one in the bag, with that in mind I took the opportunity to walk my dogs quickly and when I came back 15 minutes later my Mets were down 5-4 as I could not believe that Noah Syndergaard had giving up the lead so fast. But it was only the 4th inning so the Mets can still come back but Noah kept getting hit and the Mets would not score another run as the Mets blew this one 11-4.

Than you saw the Yankees who were hosting the AL best Texas Rangers on a raining Monday night in the Bronx as both teams had to slug trough the rain all game long. The Yankees held a 6-5 lead when they got to the 9th and in came Aroldis Chapman to close the door, but with the rainy conditions that everyone had to slop through Chapman was one that could not handle the conditions as he was wild and struggling to throw strikes. Chapman walked the 1st batter to start things off and than fell behind 3-1 to Shin Sho Cho and that's when Joe Girardi decided to come out of the dugout to try and wiggle his team out of a tough situation. After a brief chat with the umps, out came the grounds crew and the game was all of a sudden halted as it looked like Joe Girardi was trying to now swindle a win out of the Rangers. Out came Rangers manager Jeff Bannister who was clearly not happy with the umps decision as he was now giving them an ear full.

3 plus hours later the game would resume as Girardi didn't get his wish and with about 10 fans in the stadium he had too turn to Kirby Yates to replace Chapman. Yates was awful hitting 3 batters as the Rangers had scored 4 runs to beat the Yanks 9-6 as the umps stuck with it and didn't hand the Yanks the win.

So this is how the week began and it didn't get better on Tuesday as the Yanks went on to lose again 7-1 and the Mets got shutout 5-0 to make it 2 in row for NY. Than on Wednesday the Mets were on the verge of a sweep as the Nationals looked to lengthen their lead to 6 games with the win and Max Scherzer and Daniel Murphy took care of the rest as the sweep was completed. Terry Collins and the Mets got outplayed and Mets fans were now left wondering what had just happened.

As for the Yanks and the rest of their 4 game series vs Texas, Masahiro Tanaka would get battered around for 6 runs as the Yankees found themselves down 7-3 as they entered the 9th with another L looming. But a 3 run HR by Brian McCann, capped by a 2 run HR by Didi Gregorious and the Yankees had come all the way back for the 9-7 walk off for their biggest win of the season. Then on Thursday it was another walk off as Chase Headley came home on the wild pitch for the 2-1 victory as the Yanks had turns things around and managed the split in the 4 game series.

So here we were midway through the week and it was doom and gloom for the Mets as they came home to finish off the week with a 4 game series vs best team in baseball the Chicago Cubs, while the Yanks went out west for 3 more vs the Padres.

Nathan Evoldi took the ball to start the series and his tough stretch of late continued, the Yanks would fall a run short scoring 4 in the 9th suffering the 7-6 lost. Evoldi gave up 6 runs in 4.1 innings giving up 2 more long balls as his time as a Yankees starter could be on the brink. In was another tough lost on Saturday with the game tied at 1 in the 9th as Andrew Miller gave up a 440 ft. blast to Melvin Upton Jr. for another walk off as the Yanks had another tough start to a series.

Back to Citi Field for the 1st game vs the Cubs and there was the Mets down 3-0 in the 6th as the feeling was not good and things were looking grim. The Mets were looking at their 4th straight lost but in the 6th up came Cespedes launching a 466 feet blast to the 3rd deck, a place he once visited during his HR Derby title of 2014, a place that no other hitter in Citi Field history had ever visited during a regular game. That would wake up the crowd and the Mets bats as later in the 7th the Mets would come back to grab the lead. Rookie Brandon Nimmo came through with a big at-bat and made it 3-2 Cubs, then throwing error by 2nd baseman Javier Baez led to 2 runs was the capper in the inning as the Mets now led 4-3. But when the 9th came around Jeurys Familia had put himself in a tough situation with a lead off walk that was followed by a Ben Zorbist double as things looked real dicey. Familia struck out Kris Bryant for the 1st out and than intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo to load the bases, Familia would get nasty striking out rookie Willson Contreras for the 2nd out and got Javier Baez to pop out for the 27th out as the Mets had beaten the Cubs to stop the bleeding.

It was just what the Mets needed as they would go on to take the next 3 and sweep the 4 game series as the Mets made it 8 in a row vs the Cubs which dates back to NLCS. It was a huge series win and tremendous confidence builder as the Mets bats finally woke up vs the Cubs pitching's collecting a total of 12 HR's in the series. No one saw it coming but the Mets had turned things around big time and really what can you say? The Mets had come back after their tough series to the Nationals and they get ready to face them again this week for 4 more this time at Citi Field. But 1st it's 3 with the Miami Marlins later on today.

Now back to the Yankees who would go on to win their final game vs the Padres to avoid the sweep but it was a 3-4 week as they stay under the 500 mark as the question continues to be when will the Yankees begin to sell? The rumors have already started as Yankees fans begin to dream about  a Andrew Miller for Kyle Schwarber swap, but when you hear the Yankees brass talk when ask if they are ready to sell, what you hear from guys like Randy Levine is the total opposite as they continue to treat their fans like dopes.

As for the Mets, things are obviously on the ups, the bats have come to life, Juan Lagares is back and Jose Reyes and Michael Conforto are working their way back so the feeling is good. Matt Harvey gets things started later on today vs the Marlins who have always been a torn to the Mets so hopefully Harvey can get himself a win and continue the good vibes. As for the Yanks, its 3 with the White Sox and 4 more with the upstart Indians, another tough stretch, all on the road.

I really hope they don't for Schwarber. Terrible defender and would eat up the DH role plus coming off a major knee injury...no thanks.
Good for showing for the Mets vs. the Cubs who have seem to hit a rough patch, I think having that large of a lead sometimes leads to teams slacking off. Lets see how both teams finish up before the break.

I'm kind of surprised you won't make that move for Schwarber, I understand he's not a good defender but that guy can be your DH for the next 10 years. I honestly think that if that trade was on the table that it would be the Cubs who would not go for it. So who would you want on the Cubs for a trade of Chapman or Miller?

Was watching the Mets game and had to leave it as Matt Harvey had another stinker, 11 hits in just 3.2 and 6 runs. And the Yanks lost another one.

For Chapman I make that move but for Miller I would want way more than a one dimensional type player, we've been burned before by those types. Chapman is a rental but Miller is signed for another 2 years I think so I would want a big return for him.
Heard about Harvey but saw that the Mets were able to come back. Who would have thought that the Mets starting pitching would be suspect.

So who would you want from the Cubs if it ain't Schwarber? Again if that trade is on the table the Yanks do it but I don't think the Cubs would so, would you rather have Soler or Baez over Schwarber? or one of their prospects.

Matt Harvey is the only one who has not pitched to his potential and essentially has become our 5th starter, everyone else has done their job. I like to know what team wouldn't mind having Harvey lined up as their 5th starter.

Mets are 3rd in MLB when it comes to ERA. 4th in quality starts, 2nd in earn runs. I don't think the Mets will be looking for a starting pitcher to boost up their chances of a playoff run unless someone gets hurt and goes down, knock on wood.
