NL Wildcard Preview

After 162 games the NY Mets get an extra game added to their schedule, tonight they take on the San Francisco Giants in a win or go home game for the opportunity to play a 5 game series vs the Chicago Cubs and their ML best 104 wins.

So how did the Mets get here? it wasn't easy but on August 19th they were struggling as a team playing under 500 ball at 60-62 and they were 5 games out of the WC.

Things were not looking good their chances of making the post season looked pretty grim at the time. During this period I had said that this season was just not meant to be and had pretty much moved on and began to think about 2017 due to all the injuries crippling the Mets chances.

This was during the time when the Mets had just lost Jacob deGROM and Steven Matz as the rotation which had kept them afloat through out this injury riddle season had now taken a chunk out of the rotation. With no deGROM and no Matz there was no way the Mets were going to keep things going, they looked done.

The Mets had no choice but to call up unknowns Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman to fill in, at the same time they had also lost Wilmer Flores who had just taken over for Neil Walker who was also lost to the season as the injuries just never stopped. In place of Walker and Flores the Mets brought up un-drafted, NY native T.J. Rivera to play some 2nd base and T.J. filled in taking over the position and coming up with some clutch hits.

Mean while Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo went on to pitch like deGROM and Matz's and the Mets didn't miss a beat, plus they were able to take full advantage of a weak schedule going 27-13 to finish out the season and beat out the SF Giants and St. Louis Cardinals for the #1 WC spot. The Giants who stumbled down the stretch were able to beat out the Cardinals who got no help from the LA Dodgers as the Giants were able to win their last 4 games and sweep the Dodgers to get in.

So this is where we are tonight the Mets take on the Giants in a do or die situation.

This is an odd year so the Giants are back on track to make another title run, they also have Madison Bumgardner and his post season credentials on the hill so this won't be easy. The Mets will counter with Noah Syndergaard and have the home fans on their side.

Yes the Mets are in the playoffs but to me this is just 1 extra and if they lose it will not feel like they made it to the playoffs so they need to win to make this season complete. If they win and go on to lose to the Cubs I'm cool with but I have the feeling that if the Mets can some how win tonights game they will go on to beat the Cubs and make another run so it all depends if they can go on and beat the playoffs proven Giants tonight.

Terry Collins will not reveals his staring lineup till the game tonight but this is who I go with...

3B - Jose Reyes
SS - Adrubal Cabrerra
LF - Yeonis Cespedes
CF - Curtis Granderson
RF - Jay Bruce
2B - T.J. Rivera
1B - James Looney
C  -  Rene Rivera

As the saying goes "all hands on deck" hopefully the Mets can get to Bumgardner and score a few runs and Syndergaard can hold off the Giants and give the Mets 7 strong innings and hand it over to Addison Reed and Familia. If the game goes into extra innings I look for Bartolo Colon.

There is no tomorrow so LET GO METS! win and keep the 2016 season alive.

Let's Go METS!!! It won't be easy, I remember telling you in the off-season that the giants with the moves they made would make noise and you didn't think they would. You fail to realize how everything just happen to go there way all the time in 2010, 2012 and 2014 so I'm hoping that trend ends tonight. Bum is a big game pitcher, if the Mets can get into the giants bullpen I love the Mets chances but it won't be easy, just look at the wild card game that Bum pitched in Pittsburgh. Like you, I'll be rooting on the Mets tonight.

Yea I remember you telling me about the Giants, I just didn't like the Samardijia and Cueto signings, but here they are.

A lot of peeps are picking the Giants in this, not sure what the odds are in Vegas but I'm guessing it's the Giants, I know it won't be easy cause the Giants have that pedigree around this time and I know they have lots of confidence, but in 1 game anything can happen and I'm hoping that with the home crowd on are side, and with Noah who is no slouch, the Mets will be able to find a way and get in that series vs the Cubs, but I won't be surprise to see them lose.

That's what worries me about this game, the bounces always go the giants way when it comes to October. Its uncanny but with that said, the law of averages tells you that things have to go the other way at some point so let's hope its tonight. Vegas has the giants favored in this game, we'll see what happens. 15 minutes to game time. I'll be listening to the Mets feed on the drive home.
