Mets finished another week of 3-3 baseball

The 2nd week of the season has been completed and for the Mets, for the 2nd straight week, it has been their inconsistency at scoring runs, and leaving runners on base that has kept the Mets at 6-6 so far.
On Monday it was the home opener for the Mets at their new home CitiField, as a new era that is suppose to be for the Mets at their new digs began with more of the same old Mets baseball. When it was over the Mets had lost their opener.

Mike Pelphey got the honorary start and throw a 1st pitch strike to get the game underway, but on his 3rd pitch to leadoff hitter Jody Gerut, Pelphey got taken deep into the right field seats as Gerut quickly became the 1st man to get a hit at Citifield, it was not the start one had in mind, and it was just the beginning.
Things got a little weird after that, in the 2nd inning Mike Pelphey would stumble in embarrassment trying to make a pitch and could only smiles about it. In the 4th, a cat then enters the game around the Mets dugout, frantically scurrying around until finding a way out of the stadium. It brought back memories of the infamous black cat back in 1969 vs Ron Santos and the Chicago Cubs, only this cat did not bring in any luck.
Things began to turn around for the Mets in the 5th when David Wright would come up to the plate with the Mets down 3 runs and 2 on, Wright would hit the Mets 1st homerun at Citifield, by a Met, to tie the game at 5. But in the very next inning, the Padres would get the lead right back when Pedro Feliciano would balk in the go ahead run to give the Padres a 6-5 lead.
The Mets would not get many chances after that and in the 8th the Padres brought in former Met Duaner Sanchez who would get the Mets in 1, 2, 3 fashion, and in the 9th, another former Met, Heath Bell, would get his chance to do it to the team that did not give him much of a chance to succeed while in a Met uniform. He was pumped! Bell would get the job done and close the game for the Padres as the Mets lost the opener 6-5. The Padres would go on to win the series 2 to 1.

On Friday the Milwaukee Brewers who last season edge the Mets for the wildcard came into town for a 3 game series and their 1st look at CitiField. On Saturday, after the Mets had took the 1st game 5-4, it was Johan Santana making his CitiField debut, and it was a good one. Santana who was coming of a lost to the Marlin's in a game he struck out 13 batters, went for 7 scoreless inning and a 1-0 win, he was helped out by a scoreless 8th by JJ Putz, and a scoreless 9th and the save for K-ROD. It was a great day at the new park for the fans and for myself who made it out to the new park to check out the new home, it looked perfect.

On Sunday the Mets were looking for the sweep of the Brewers and sent out Nelson Figuerroa to make the start instead of Mike Pelphey who was given an extra week of rest. The Mets scored 1st in the very 1st inning just like they had been doing lately, scoring runs early, but it was the Brewers who took home the victory 4-2.
The Mets would squandered many opportunities, a trend that has been the main problem for the Mets early in the season. Several times the Mets had their chances to get a lead but twice hit into double plays to be turned away. If there is a concern for the Mets early on, this is it. Leaving runners on base, and the inability to come up with the big hit to break the game wide open has been the trend. Hopefully the bats will come alive and the Mets can win some games big because the pitching has been ok so far, especially the bullpen which at the moment, is the best in the Major Leagues.

The Mets will now get ready for a series on Tuesday vs the St. Louis Cardinals, in St. Louis, then finish off the week coming back home with a series vs the Washington Nationals.
