Another Met to the DL
Last Night, the team of the walking wounded lost yet another player when before the game between the St. Louis Cardinals the Mets learned that thier all star CF Carlos Beltran was headed to the DL due to his sore right knee that had been bothering him for some time had worsen.
This one could be the one that completely breaks the Mets if Beltran was to hit the shelve for more then the 2 weeks he is expected to miss, because with the Mets team doctors you just never know, Jose Reyes has been injured and at 1st Reyes was suppose to miss a few games which then turned into weeks and now it has been a month, you just never know.
With the injury, the Mets and Omar Minaya are now in a position where they almost have to make a move, but seeing how the Mets have been operating during this injury plague of a season, which is pretty much staying put and choosing to just ride the wave with what they have until things get better, but with every injury piling up one after the other, the Mets can't continue on this path for to long. Right now Omar knows that he can be taken for a ride if he tries to deal now where teams know he is deperate, I don't want Nick Johnson or Abrey Huff, just stick with what we have for now until some better names become available, so ride the wave!
It can't get any worst if your a Met fan, this season has been a jinx one, Sports Illustrated picked the Mets to win it all, and this is what you get the SI curse. Right now the Met are coming off a bad stretch in which they have lost 4 straight series to the Phillies, Yankees, Orioles and the Ray's. It has been a combination of the bullpen not being able to do the job, some bad baserunning, and bigtime errors.
Lucky for the Mets, the Phillies have been going bad as well losing 6 straight games, all at home, which is why with all that has gone wrong for the Mets, they still are only 2 games back of the Phillies.
As a Met fan this is what I hold my fate on, and that is that right now the Phillies are going through some problems of their own. Right now their starting pitching has not been anything to write about, the offense has been in a major funk after losing Raul Ibanez last week who was having an MVP season, Brad Lidge has been hurt and nothing like his perfect 2008 season. At home, the Phillies have lost their touch sporting a 13-22 record, but at the same time they have a road mark of 23-9 which is the best in baseball.
Without Beltran the Mets are now hoping that guys like Fernando Tatis, Daniel Murphy, and Ryan Church give the team more of what they gotten so far, because so far they have not pan out. Another problem has to be the power that has been missing big time this season especially from Mr. David Wright, who at the moment has only 4 homeruns to his season, and has struck out a ton. Right now Wright is on pace to hit only 10 homers, and strike out the most times in his career, but still he is the leading hitter in the NL, it does not make sense. Leading the team in homeruns is 42 year old Gary Sheffield with 8, who is getting more playing time then the team had plan to give the aging Sheff. Today the Mets called back Fernando Martinez who was just sent down to the minors 2 days ago, but now he is back for a 2nd chance to show and prove, for guys like Martinez, this is their chance, guys like ALex Cora who has filled in nicely in Reyes absent, guys like Fernando Nieve, Tatis and Murphy, time to step it up. It is bad and it seems like the team is falling apart at the seams, but with all that has happened so far, they are still in it to win it, with plenty of baseball still to be played. One thing we have seen from the Mets is fight,
for the most part the Mets have been able to hang in most of the games, and although most of the times they find a way to lose, you still have to like a team that fights and is able to keep themselves in games despite the lost in key players.
Last night the Mets beat the Cardinals 6-4, Omir Santos went 4-4, Daniel Murphy went deep for his 5th dinger, Luis Castillo went 3-3, Tim Redding went 7 innings to earn his 1st win as a Met, Brain Stoke came in the 8th to face Albert Pujols and induced Pujols to bounce into a double play, and K-ROD came in and picked up save #19, to move the Mets a game and a half out of 1st place. Today the series continues as Livian Hernandez takes the ball vs Joel Piniero, as the Mets will look to continue to look for someone to step up their game.
