Mets keep falling apart.
Former Knick guard Michael Ray Richardson once said (the ship be sinking) this was in reference to the Knicks play at the time when the team was in a downward spiral and falling fast, well for the New York Mets the ship is sinking. Fresh off the Subway Series sweep to the hands of the big bad and mighty New York Yankees who easily busted out the brooms on the Meties during last weekend series in front of the home fans at CitiField, the punchless Mets who could only mustered up 3 runs and a total of 9 hits in the entire 3 game set, now face a critical stretch that could sink the Mets as far as back as 6 to 7 games back by the allstar break.
No offense and sloppy defense will not win you games and that was exactly the brand of baseball the Mets displayed to their fans this weekend. The Yankees came into town and slapped the Mets around like a little brother., pretty much it was like the Yankees were playing a AAA team. One thing that was very noticeable about the Mets style of play was their bad news bear defense which has become a trademark of late. On Friday the Yankees scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning off of Mike Pelphey who was not helped out when the Mets committed 3 errors in 1 inning. Alex Cora, Nick Evans and David Wright all blew plays behind Pelphey that ultimately led to a 9-1 beating, then on Sunday ESPN primetime, you saw Daniel Murphy make an errant throw to load the bases, then 3 batters later, Murphy's inability to handle a low throw led to 3 runs for the Yankees in the very 1st inning, right there you knew it was over.
Once again the Mets pretty much beat themselves and continue to lead the league in finding ways to lose games instead of finding ways to win them. Jerry Manuel said rather cheerfully after the Mets had just been finished off by the Yankees, that we need to catch some breaks, that the team needs to play perfect ball in order to win games, that right now with the lineup he is throwing out there, the pitching has to be perfect and the defense has to be solid, but had nothing to say about the horrid defense that his team been displaying, he then left the podium chuckling trying to make light of everything that had befallen his team. As a Met fan this is not the kind of tone I want to see out of my manager who right now seems to be crying out for help but sees no help coming. The Mets are decimated with injuries and as of now nothing has been done by Omar Minaya who is going with the flow and waiting for better days. Manuel must be feeling like he has been left out to dry when you see guys like Mark Derosa and Nate McCluth moved around and the Mets who have been missing players to the DL for close to 2 months now have not reached out for reinforcements. Right now the Mets are missing 5 of their key players and most likely may not see any of them again this year. Those guys are Jose Reyes the dynamic leadoff shortstop and catalyst of the team who looks uncertain and has no time table as far as when he is to return, Carlos Delgado the teams cleanup hitter and most clutch hitter and power bat is schedule for a late return but don't bet on it, John Maine the team #3 man in the rotation went down 2 weeks ago and was schedule to pitch this week but was pushed back when his discomfort did not improved, JJ Putz the teams setup man to K-ROD went down about 3 weeks ago and now the word is that he may not be back this year, and then their is Carlos Beltran, the allstar CF went down lame as was to miss 2 weeks but now Beltran future looks bleak as now possible knee surgery could knock him out for the rest of the season, OUCH!
So looking at this team current state, what is there to feel good about? The season seems to be a cursed one and nothing good looks to be coming out of it, at the beginning of the season SI had picked the Mets to win it all, thank you SI, you have proven that you are a cursed institution.
The Mets who still only find themselves 3 games back are lucky that the Phillies have been bad and that they play in the weakest division right now, but if this is the team that the Mets will continue to throw out there with guys like Arenis Reyes, Nick Evans, Fernando Tatis, Alex Cora, Omir Santos, a 42 year old cleanup with one bad leg in Sheff, then how long till the Mets join the Nationals down in the Standing? It will be hard to stay optimistic, there are still 86 games to be played, but you also have to be a realist and understand that the current state of the Mets is not a very good one, and that you be fooling yourself to think that this season is still up for grabs, to be honest that's not me. I come to understand that just because you start off with a good looking team it does not mean everything will fall into place, and for the Mets everything has fallen apart. Last night the Milwaukee Brewers took care of the Mets easily for their 4th straight lost, tonight Santana takes the mound to hopefully stop the skid, but what if Santana get one of those games where he gets no run support, it will not matter.
