What a difference a week makes, talk about a total turnaround for the NY Mets who got off to a struggling start to their 2010 campaign. 2 weeks into the season & you had the Mets playing 4-8 ball & in last place, but this past week the Mets were able to turn things around as they pulled off a 6-1 week to find their way, thanks to the right remedy for when your going bad, a 4 game series with the Chicago Cubs, man I thought the Mets were bad.
The week began with some changes with the exit of 1st baseman Mike Jacobs, in came Ike Davis to replace him. Mets fans were wondering how this guy named IKE did not make the team after that impressive showing this spring but instead the Mets brass decided to go with Jacobs to begin the season but it didn't take long for Jacobs to do what he does before the fans started calling for IKE.
So far Ike Davis has been a breath of fresh air to the struggling ball club that needed something new instead of the same old stench that has been lingering around from last season. The Mets are now 6-1 with IKE in the lineup & I'm not saying he has everything to do with the good play of late, but he has done his part. In his major league debut he went 2-4 with an RBI as the Mets get their 5th win. Then there was the game on Friday with the Mets down a run, up came Davis who took a swing and launched his 1st homerun, a bomb that landed in the Shea Bridge, it would be the spark that the Mets needed as they won their 8th. Then there was that defensive play where he ending up going over the railing for a nice catch in foul territory. It was only 1 week worth but in that week you saw a lot more to like from IKE then Mike Jacobs entire career.
Right now the Mets are playing some good ball but D. Wright continues his struggling ways striking out to the tune of league leaders. Now you here the boo birds giving it to Wright so hopefully David will be able to snap out of it soon so we don't have to here that nonsense. Then there is Jason Bay who so far has yet to hit a HR as a Met. Hopefully he can get that 1st one out of the way soon before it becomes David Ortiz kind of back page news. Those are the negatives but that's ok cause today we see more positives from the Mets, what a surprise. And what about the Jose Reyes experiment in the 3rd slot? well so far were 3-0 with Jose batting 3rd, if anything it lengthen up the lineup & you saw it last night how from the 3rd slot he was still able to be Jose Reyes, 2 outs & no one on, base hit by Jose, he then steals 2nd, Bay hot shot too 3rd, bad throw by Chipper in the dirt, here comes Jose to scores the only & winning run, a manufactured run by Jose.
Yes things got a whole lot better for the NY Mets but what about those guys from the Bronx? Well this week the defending champions took their act on the road to face the Oakland A's who so far have been a surprise. But against the A's it was the Yankees who took 2 out 3 to take yet another series. Now it was off to Anaheim for another series with those Angels, their 2nd meeting of the season.
This one turned out to be an intense meeting between the 2 clubs as in the series opener there was some heated exchanges. Game 1 would go to the Angels when Joba Chamberlain came in & gave it up to Kendry Morales in the 8th for the 6-4 lost as the Yankees had lost 2 in a row for the 1st time this season. Earlier in the game Ervin Santana was seen complaining about the strike zone as he gave the home plate umpire the look for not calling some strikes in his favor. This in not the 1st time Santana has shown his displeasure with the way balls & strikes are called when playing the Yankees, in his last outing vs the Yankees, the home opener at the Stadium, Santana was quoted after the game as saying that this kind of things happens every time the Angels play the Yankees or Boston, On this night Santana's displeasure continued when he beaned Mark Texiera who was certainly not happy about getting hit once again. That was capped off with Texiera taking out his frustrations on the Angels rookie catcher Bobby Wilson when he took out the youngster with a collision at the plate that sent the rookie to the DL, he was out for the count. Texiera who has been having a hard time to start the season probably lost it in that situation because the plate was not blocked for him to do what he did to Bobby Wilson. I feel sorry for the kid who was getting his chance to play but instead his chance will have to wait. The Yanks would bounce back on Saturday with with a 7-1 win to even up the series thanks to another gem by Andy Dandy who goes to 3-0 for the season, but the rubber game proved to be revenge for the Angels as they took the series thanks to another bad outing by Javier Vasquez who had an early 3-0 lead but gave it away in the 5th as the Angels came back for the win. Late in the game Joe Girardi had some indecision when he 1st wanted to walk Kendry Morales but in the middle of the at bat Girardi decided to pitch to Morales anyways and boy was it a mistake, Morales took Damaso Marte & the Yankees deep once again to put the game out of reach, at the time the Yanks were down by a run. It was the 1st series the Yanks had dropped as they would end the week with a 3-3 record as they fall out of 1st place.
Again the only negative this week for the Mets was John Maine who once again gave it up like a 2 dollar hoe. This time it was excuses excuses by Maine who left the game in the middle of a jam complaining about pain on his none pitching arm. BS! This all sounds to me like when Ollie Perez had that awful performance last year against Philly where after that start the Mets vanish Perez to the DL seemingly making up a leg injury as an escape. I think it's time for the Mets to do the same with Maine & take that injury he made up this week & follow suit. For the Yankees their negative continues to be Javier Vasquez who did win on Tuesday but gave it up on Sunday after the Yankees gave him the early lead. And then there is still Mark Texiera who continues to be below the Mendoza line.
Things move forward as the Mets take on the Dodgers then go to Philly for their 1st big series of the year. As for the Yankees they move on to Baltimore as they try to get back to beating teams with a series with the lowly Birds, then come back to the stadium to take on Barack Obama's Chicago White Soxs.
